Pattern

Choose your size from the chart. The turning chain does not count as a stitch.

Row 1: HDC in the second ch from the hook and in each ch until five chains remain. SC in each of the last five chains. Ch 1, turn.

Row 2: SC in the BLO of the first five sts. HDC in each remaining st. Ch 1, turn.

Row 3: HDC in each st until five sts remain. SC in the BLO of the last five sts. Ch 1, turn.

Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until you have completed the total number of rows listed for your size. On the final row, omit the turning chain. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for seaming.

Assembly

Fold the rectangle so the first and last rows meet, with the SC brim edges lined up. Whip stitch the side seam.

Weave yarn in and out around the open top edge, catching the end of each row. Pull tightly to gather and close the crown. Secure the yarn and weave in all ends. Turn the hat right side out.

Pattern Notes

The five SC stitches always stay at the brim end of the hat.

After Row 1, work the brim’s SC stitches in the BLO. Work the HDC stitches through both loops.

The starting chain creates one fewer stitch than the number chained. For example, a chain of 36 creates 35 stitches in Row 1.

Row counts are a starting point. Before seaming, wrap the rectangle around the intended head and add or remove rows as needed for a comfortable fit.

Yarn choice and tension can change the finished size
