Abbreviations

US crochet terms

CH: Chain

DC: Double crochet

FLO: Front loop only

BLO: Back loop only

Pattern Notes

Work the hat flat, then seam the panel and gather the top.

The starting chain determines the hat’s height; the number of rows determines its circumference.

CH 2 at the beginning of each new row does not count as a stitch.

Every row has 28 working stitches.

All FLO and BLO stitches are double crochet stitches.

Finished measurements and yarn quantity have not yet been recorded.

Instructions

Foundation: CH 30.

Row 1: DC in the third CH from the hook and in each remaining CH across. (28 DC)

Row 2: CH 2, turn. DC FLO in the next stitch, DC BLO in the next stitch. Repeat from * to * across. (28 DC)

Row 3: CH 2, turn. DC BLO in the next stitch, DC FLO in the next stitch. Repeat from * to * across. (28 DC)

Rows 4–17: Repeat Rows 2–3 seven more times, alternating which loop you begin each row with. (28 DC)

Row 18: CH 2, turn. DC through both loops of each stitch across. (28 DC)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for seaming.

Assembly

Seam the hat: Fold the panel in half, bringing Row 1 and Row 18 together. Sew these edges together to form a tube.

Close the top: Using a yarn needle, weave yarn around one open end of the tube. Pull to gather the top, leaving a small opening for the pom-pom’s elastic loop. Secure the gathered stitches.

Attach the pom-pom: Pull the elastic loop through the top opening into the inside of the hat. Sew over and around the elastic loop several times, anchoring it to the crochet fabric to hold the pom-pom securely.

Secure your yarn and weave in all ends.
